Skills

Skills are reusable instructions that teach Coupler AI how to handle a specific task the way an experienced analyst would. When your request matches a skill, the AI follows that skill's procedure end to end, so you get consistent, expert results without spelling out every step.

Skills are the third layer of context. Data context and business context tell the AI what your data means; skills tell it how to do the work.

What you can do with skills

  • Rely on built-in expertise. Skills cover common jobs (building a data flow, documenting a data set, writing a report, and more), so the AI follows a proven procedure instead of improvising. Domain skills also prime the AI to focus on the metrics and dimensions that matter for your field.

  • Install ready-made skills. Add skill templates to your workspace from the Skills library.

  • Create custom skills. Capture your own procedures so the AI handles recurring tasks your way.

  • Manage your library. Edit or remove the skills available to your workspace.

  • Use them anywhere. Skills live in your Coupler.io workspace, so they're available wherever you use Coupler.io: the AI Agent and every AI destination.

The Skills library

Open the Skills library in Coupler.io to see every skill available to your workspace. Each skill has a title, a short description of when to use it, and the instructions the AI follows.

  • Ready-made skills. Templates you can install for your workspace.

  • Custom skills. Skills you create yourself.

  • Filter by category or search to find the one you need.

Managing skills, which covers installing, creating, editing, and removing, is available to workspace members but not to guest users. Built-in skills are always available and can't be removed.

Create a custom skill

1

Open the Skills library and choose to add a skill.

2

Give it a title and description. The description tells the AI when the skill should be used, so make it specific.

3

Write the instructions. Lay out the procedure you want the AI to follow: the steps, rules, and any conventions it should apply.

4

Save. The skill is now available to your AI Agent and will be used whenever a request matches it.

How skills are invoked

A skill is invoked based on its description. The description says when the skill applies, and it's matched to the task you're asking for. Writing a clear, specific description is what makes the right skill kick in at the right time.

You can also invoke a skill yourself:

  • In the Coupler AI Agent. Type / in the chat to open the skill menu, then pick a skill and its command is inserted for you. Keep typing after the slash to filter by name or description.

  • In external AI tools. Skills are exposed as prompts. Open your AI tool's prompt picker (for example, the slash or prompt menu in Claude or ChatGPT) and choose a Coupler.io skill to run it.

Skills are open source

Coupler.io's skill catalog is public at github.com/coupler-io/skills. Every skill is a readable SKILL.md file, so you can see the procedure the AI follows, adapt one to your business, or contribute an improvement. If you work in Claude Code, the repository is also a plugin marketplace, so see its README for what's available and how to install it.

Available in

Skills power the Coupler AI Agent and are available across every AI destination: Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, Custom MCP, Gemini CLI, OpenClaw, and Perplexity.
