# CoinMarketCap

CoinMarketCap is the world's most referenced cryptocurrency data platform, tracking prices, market caps, trading volumes, and rankings for thousands of digital assets. It also provides fiat exchange rates, exchange-level data, and category classifications.

Connecting CoinMarketCap to Coupler.io lets you:

* **Monitor crypto prices automatically** — pull live or historical quotes into spreadsheets or dashboards without manual copy-pasting
* **Track market rankings** — keep tabs on the latest listings and market cap movements across assets
* **Combine with other financial data** — join crypto quotes with fiat rates or exchange data using Coupler.io's Join and Aggregate transformations
* **Feed AI tools** — send market data directly to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or other AI destinations for analysis and commentary

## Prerequisites

* A CoinMarketCap account with an active API key (available on the [CoinMarketCap Developer Portal](https://coinmarketcap.com/api/))
* The free Basic plan provides access to the core endpoints used by Coupler.io; higher-tier plans unlock historical data

{% hint style="warning" %}
Historical OHLCV data requires a paid CoinMarketCap API plan. The free tier covers latest market data only.
{% endhint %}

## Quick start

{% hint style="success" %}
Start with the **Listings** entity to get a ranked overview of all cryptocurrencies, then add a **Quotes** entity filtered to your specific symbols for focused tracking.
{% endhint %}

{% stepper %}
{% step %}
**Create a new data flow in Coupler.io.** Go to your Coupler.io workspace and click **Add data flow**. Search for and select **CoinMarketCap** as your source.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
**Enter your CoinMarketCap API key.** In the source settings, paste your API key from the CoinMarketCap Developer Portal into the API key field.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
**Select an entity.** Choose from Categories, Listings, Quotes, Fiats, or Exchanges depending on the data you need.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
**Configure data type and symbols.** Set the data type to **latest** or **historical**. If you selected Quotes, enter the cryptocurrency symbols you want to track (one per line, e.g., BTC, ETH, SOL).
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
**Choose your destination.** Select where to send the data — Google Sheets, Excel, BigQuery, Looker Studio, or an AI destination like ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
**Run the data flow.** Click **Run** to execute a manual sync and confirm your data loads correctly before setting up a schedule.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://docs.coupler.io/sources/category/finance-and-accounting/coinmarketcap.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
